Fazenda Nova Tavira, Algarve, Portugal
Tucked away in the rolling countryside of the Eastern Algarve, this traditional Portuguese family home and farm has been given a stylish modern makeover while retaining many of its original features. Located near the beautiful historic coastal town of Tavira, it’s only minutes away from the region’s famous coastline and beaches.
It offers ten luxurious suites, its own restaurant and library, as well as a romantic landscaped garden and pool.
There are seven garden suites and two apartments, all with private gardens. The apartments can be interconnected and have a small kitchenette. In addition to these suites, there is one upper-level penthouse, which has its own private terrace and fire pit. All rooms have wooden Balinese beds, luxurious bedding, and en-suite polished-concrete bathrooms with rain showers.
The country house has an in-house restaurant, which offers seasonal menus using produce from its own garden and orchard. Flavors are Iberian, with some international influences. Fish is brought straight to the kitchen from the nearby Olhao fish market.
Guests are invited to choose from a variety of spots to relax in. Upstairs is the mezzanine library, with design books, as well as an eclectic collection of novels and magazines. The library leads to an outside terrace with views of the ocean and surrounding hills.
A subtly landscaped garden surrounds the house and leads to an infinity pool nestled among lavender and rosemary plants. Pods hang from olive trees around the property, and sun loungers dot the large terraced deck.
The property is surrounded by rolling countryside, salt pans, characterful fishing ports and the Ria Formosa coastline that sweeps south to Spain. It is close to the town of Tavira, on the river Gilao, known for its Roman bridge and outdoor amphitheater, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Other local towns worth visiting include Olhao, Fuseta, Santa Luzia and Santa Catarina.
The Ria Formosa Natural Park is pefect for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Nearby islands Farol, Culatra, Armona, Tavira and Fuseta are all great destinations, easily reached by water taxi.
