We were inspired by this impeccably crafted and restored boutique hotel where the intersection of subtle modern style, authentic Renaissance character and the sweetness of village life comes alive. We like the contrasting design relationship between the historic and the contemporary that’s relaxed, chic and simple.
Tuscan Boutique Hotel Pienza, Italy
Tucked inside the historic center of the UNESCO jewel of Pienza, this rambling Renaissance-era palazzo and former convent opens right out to the cobbled stone lanes of Corso Rossellino and into the heart of town.
Blending completely with the character of the rest of the village, its facade is indistinguishable from the surrounding buildings but the interiors have undergone an energetic and modern restoration in tone while carefully preserving the beautiful structural bones and authentic charm.
Discovered and restored by American expats escaping NYC and the hustle of the music industry, the owners sought to create a comfortable, fun, and stylish place to relax, eat well and experience the daily rhythms of everyday village life. The main floor opens out to a beautiful library and guest lounge (where you’ll have access to a fantastic vinyl record collection!)with an honor bar and there are an assortment of twelve beautifully restored guest rooms that are now rather hard to imagine as nun’s cells.
Bright and airy, each of the rooms is located on the upper floors of the townhouse, some with sweeping views across the Val D’orcia to Montepulciano, Montefollonico and Monte Amiata. With a stylish collection of contemporary furnishings and decor and a bold palette of light grey, yellow and orange, the rooms each have great individual style.
The restaurant overlooks the medieval walled gardens and serves modern Italian cuisine and market fresh locally sourced ingredients. A chic and welcoming space, the design is vintage modern and the food and wine are excellent. Behind the property the private garden provides a unique and peaceful oasis inside the village.
This is a beautifully designed and realized hotel that respectfully honors it’s cultural origins with a little urban sophistication and cool, modern style.

A Renaissance jewel in southern Tuscany, Pienza is one of several amazing historic hilltop towns in the UNESCO region of Val d’Orcia. Although the summer crowds come and go, life hums along here as it has for centuries where you can enjoy the stillness of the main piazza in the morning, the old ladies on their daily shopping, and the evening hum of bustling trattorias. It’s one of the more ideal Renaissance towns beautifully designed by Pope Pius in the 16th century. Endlessly picturesque, Tuscany remains one of the most idealized settings on earth and for good reason. Ideally situated close to Montepulciano, Siena and Perugia, you’ll want a car to explore and experience the region. The food, the wine, the stunning scenery are all you’ll need. It’s ninety minutes from Florence, two hours from Rome and two and a half hours from Pisa.
