What we like about this property

This was simply one of the most exciting reinterpretations of a classic Sicilian villa we’ve seen. Restored with contemporary elegance and cool, its refined old world charm and modern spirit coexist beautifully.

Description

Regal and enchanting, this historic villa was discovered by the owners who immediately fell in love and decided to devote themselves to its careful and thoughtful restoration. Spectacularly situated along the slopes of Mount Etna, 500 meters above sea level, this 40-acre organic farm once belonged to the monks of St. Anna and is steeped in history.

The dusky pink 19th-century villa is now an elegant and eco-friendly boutique hotel that blends traditional Sicilian architecture with contemporary art along with environmental consciousness. Renovated applying the principles of bio-architecture and ecological design, over 50% of its energy comes from renewable sources.

Set in 40 acres of olive groves, citrus trees and vineyards, this boutique country hotel grows its own organic fruit, vegetables and herbs, which are then prepared for guests in the style of authentic Sicilian cuisine.

The striking decor includes reclaimed wood furnishings, an antique Palmento wine press and Phillipe Starck furnishings set against black lava walls that  echo the dramatic surroundings. An eclectic fusion of old and new, the interiors emphasize the original character while making a stunning modern statement.

Featuring a diverse collection of thirteen guest rooms in and around the villa, each with a distinct personality, all incorporate the villa’s original features such as wood-beamed ceilings and exposed stone walls. The baths have been stylishly updated with a refreshing contemporary touches and raw elemental features. (The free-standing guest room tub is a luxurious delight.) Each has a balcony or patio with stunning views of the sea, Mount Etna and the gardens.

Nestled among the citrus trees is a beautiful and serene infinity pool, with amazing views of the glittering Mediterranean in the distance. From dawn until dusk, the land, sea, and sky create a full palette of colors while Mount Etna slumbers in the distance.

More than just a boutique hotel in Sicily, this is a home which retains its intimacy, its history and provides a stylish sanctuary for travelers.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

The on-site restaurant overlooks the Mediterranean and the terrace where an organic breakfast buffet is served daily along with a delicious organic selection of meals throughout your stay.

There are frequent wine tastings where the proprietary varietals and olive oils are produced as well as farm tours and cooking classes.

Trips to Mount Etna, holistic and Ayurvedic massage, Yoga classes on the lawn, and a billiard room are provided.

Transfer to/from Airport, boat service, complimentary GPS/Navigator and parking.

    This is a MUST!

Being an expert in customer experience, I understand the difference between service and experience. It’s quite simple. Customer service is getting what you expect but customer experience is getting MORE than you expected and Monks of the Black Lands delivers a great customer EXPERIENCE. It’s the little things like someone waiting at the parking lot as we drove up to greet us and take us to check in. They wanted to have a bowl of fruit. It’s providing bar service at the pool even when the bar was not open.
The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home and Alberto (bartender / entertainer) was OUTSTANDING! We used this as our base to explore Etna and Taormina. The grounds are beautiful as well. Finally, the food was outstanding. The breakfast buffet (served in the garden) was excellent considering the fact that it was catered to everyone. My wife has a full array of fresh fruits and vegetables and a juicer to make one’s own juice. I love their fresh pastries and eggs. We loved our stay here and would highly recommend it.

    Enchanting…

The rooms are in small outbuildings scattered in the Etnean countryside between rows of vines and fruit trees. Equipped with every comfort and easily reachable. Beautiful ancient palmento where you have breakfast and the hall. Delicious restaurant

    Corner of paradise!

Precious structure, located on the slopes of Etna, characterized by good taste and quiet. Old farmhouses, expertly furnished and renovated, are the excellence of a unique boutique hotel. Zero km organic cuisine, an excellent wine cellar and first-class services make this magical place a destination for enthusiasts. Vegetable garden, vineyards and olive trees, fruit tree and many delicacies that end up on the colorful restaurant table located in the largest farmhouse that is the main body. This pleasant location is completed by a beautiful swimming pool and nature trails of the property.
Here we work for the territory and to give, to the already awarded award-winning areas, a prestige to be exported in the world.
    Direct management and professionalism.
Worth the visit and the trip.
    Thanks for the nice experience

Style and refinement in the smallest details

It really leaves a good memory and the desire to return, all impeccable without overdoing it, excellent quality of reception both in terms of rooms and breakfast and dinner. The common areas are beautiful, warm and welcoming, the staff discrete and impeccable, the old manor house is a jewel overlooking the countryside on the slopes of Etna, dotted with citrus groves. The breakfast is unforgettable, full of local products – Nebrodi ham a real delight – as meats and cheeses, and the fruit of their production, but also cakes baked daily (to try the ricotta tart) and small local bakery. We had dinner in the restaurant on the upper floor of the manor house and nothing disappointed us, both for the quality of the dishes and for the service. The employees are very polite and smiling. A philosophy of hospitality that we have promoted with full marks.

    Heavenly
Words will not make the idea of how good you are in this charming place, surrounded by greenery. Peace and tranquility reign supreme with a right side of welcoming staff and tasty dishes, refined and with a touch of extra attention to the refinement of the raw material. I will definitely be back.

Our favorite place in the whole world !!

What can I say about Monks of the Black Lands to do it justice? My wife and I absolutely adore this place – we are visited on several occasions and, without fail, we are blown away by the idyllic scenery, delicious food, fantastic wine and the amazing staff who always make you feel so welcome. Our love of Monks resulted in us asking Ada and Guido if they would do us the honor of letting us hold our wedding in their beautiful grounds and it was truly the best decision we ever made !!
You can relax in the tranquility of the beautiful pool or you can relax in the beautiful pool. Monks will leave you fully refreshed and never wanting to leave.
We have stayed in a hotel room. Some of the rooms are a short walk from the main house.
The food is always a highlight. However, I must say, the addition of Monaci’s new head has taken the food to a whole new level. I can genuinely say that it is the best food we have ever tasted anwhere in the world. If you can persuade the chef, the cannoli will be the best you have ever tasted !! The one downside of the food is so good

Whenever we leave Black Earth monks, our first thought is “when can we come back?” and I can guarantee it will not be long before we are back for another stay. A truly magical place that combines the serenity of a boutique retreat !!

    Eden
Simply a paradise to discover. Everything is taken care of in every detail … The ideal place where you can find yourself or appreciate the right company in an oasis surrounded by greenery between Etna and the sea.

The most breathtaking, lovely, Italian hotel. We loved every second at Monaci and wish we could have stayed longer.
The pool area is so comfortable and relaxing. The food, different menu every day, is made fresh from the garden. The rooms are each unique and flawless. The views are incredible. Only 30 minutes from the Catania airport. On top of all of that, it is affordable and worth every euro.
