What we like about this property

This concept is one after our own hearts, and this is a seriously dedicated tribe whose belief and practice of sustainable living is inspiring. We love the historic beauty and smart restoration of the ancient structures, and the refined handcrafted design both inside and out. This is the spot to come and savor the homegrown culture, food and community spirit of Umbria.

Description

Perched on a ridge on over forty five hectares of stunning Umbrian countryside, this 15th-century hamlet has been thoughtfully and lovingly transformed into three traditional and sustainable holiday apartments. Passing through many hands over the years – including over 50 residents at one time – the hamlet was abandoned in the 1960s and resurrected in 2013, when Tribewanted Monestevole restructured it into a model sustainable community, and fully fitted, eco-lux vacation rentals.

Celebrating and preserving the best of traditional Umbrian living and providing a beautiful, rejuvenating and inspiring experience, the three apartments are designed with stylish simplicity and comforts, each restored with their original historic stone and wood beamed features intact and simple rustic design.

There are horses, goats, a sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats and even an albino peacock at Monestevole. Kids and families are welcomed to come feed the animals in the morning and collect eggs!

Sustainable technologies are part of daily life here. The energy comes from photovoltaic solar panels, the water is heated by thermal solar, rain water and filtration systems are employed throughout the property for irrigation.  In the winter heating is powered by a wood-burning stove. The owners are constantly working to improve the property with renewable energies, recycling, water treatment, compost, permaculture and green architecture.

A beautiful model of sustainable living and celebration of Umbrian culture, this unique retreat invites you to relax and enjoy the beauty of the land, play with the animals and savor your very own slice of the Italian good life.

AROUND

Endlessly picturesque, Umbria remains one of the most idealized settings in Italy.  Monestevole is  within easy reach of several areas not to be missed.

Umbria is the greenest region of Italy; full of woodlands, which have been sustainably harvested for the past 20 years.  Local crops include olive oil, wine, sunflowers, and spelt. The region is famous for its truffles, pork meat and wild boar. Local bread is made without salt due to an old feud with the Pope on salt tax! At Monestevole, there are plenty of walks and bike rides for every level. Climb Monte Acuto or Migianella; walk to Arcelle lake for a wild swim and picnic or visit the abandoned Monestevole Castle.

For those wanting to explore Umbria and Tuscany, Monestevole is ideally placed for excursions to  nearby Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Montone, Spello, Norcia, Castelluccio, Spoleto, Montefalco, Citta’ di Castello, Narni, Trasimeno lake, Citta’ della Pieve, Orvieto, Cortona, Arezzo, Siena, Montalcino, Bagno Vignone and the Tevere springs.

I have now been four times and I love this place! The team running Monestevole are great hosts and are genuinely passionate about what they do. I adore Italian food and wine and here you have a unique opportunity to be part of the process in growing and preparing what you eat! I’ve planted farro and lettuce, and harvested everything from olives to wild mushrooms. Then you get to help Dani and Laura in the kitchen to make handmade pasta, pizza and fresh bread. The setting and the hospitality are exceptional and I will definitely be going back. You always meet interesting fellow guests – and it’s a lovely option for solo travellers. Don’t change a thing!

I wanted to thank you again for what everyone did to make my stay at Tribewanted Monestevole a wonderful experience. I showed up there because of the workshop, but Tribewanted became its own, unexpectedly magical place of healing for me.

One of the most lovely experiences of my life. It’s all about the people and Tribewanted has beautiful people working with them. We also had a great group of people visiting from far and wide and we just all hit it off.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Monestevole. It’s a beautiful place to stay, with great food and views of the Umbrian mountains, plus you learn a lot about how to live sustainably. Both the people and the dogs are very welcoming, had some great conversations with the former and great walks with the latter.

My grandson and I spent time on Vorovoro and I believe everyone there at the time had a part in shaping the young man my grandson is today! My grandson Kole is set to graduate from Boot Camp at the end of December and is a member of the US Navy. Kole got to experience people from different cultures and beliefs coming together for the common good. If I had the money I would be with tribewanted now with another of my grandsons. It truly was the best experience I’ve ever had and the fact I shared it with my grandson was even better. You can watch Kole wrestle on YouTube by searching for Kole Fiji wrestling quite fun. Much love to Fijian family and Va’s cooking is something Kole still speaks of. Much love for all Tribewanted members.

Our visit at Tribe Wanted Monestevole was excellent. The people, activities, accommodations and food was above and beyond what I expected. We had a large group of 22 people who made deep and lasting connections here with the staff and the land. We were always treated with respect and felt a part of a family. The relaxed family style living allows a space for conversation and bonding. The food, olive oil and wine is locally grown and made. Above all, the project here provides an amazing learning experience for anyone who wants to learn more about permaculture and sustainability. We also had yoga classes in a gorgeous space overlooking the valley at Monestevole. You can easily access other towns to explore that are well worth the visit. I would highly recommend if you want to experience Italy, that you try to spend time at a place like this! Not only is the view breathtaking, the bedrooms are so comfortable and clean.

Highly recommended! The food is amazing and I loved working in the gardens and with the animals. With the warm and friendly community, as well as the romantic and tastefully restored old stone buildings, I like I lived in Italy, not just visiting. Soil building and permaculture strategies are very inspiring. Deeply rewarding!

My second trip to Monestevole, and it won’t be my last. Great food, views, hospitality and a great opportunity to learn about sustainability and how to incorporate it into your own life.
In the summer I spent my time relaxing in hammocks or by the pool enjoying a book, nightly bonfires with interesting people also visiting from all over the world, taking hikes with the company of Dolly and Wow – the resident dogs and mascots of Tribewanted and stuffing myself full of great homemade Italian meals.
In my winter visit for a month long course in sustainability (for those that like to get their hands dirty) I enjoyed fires indoors, great discussions, watching documentaries, more hikes, impromptu music sessions and sing alongs, feeding the farm animals, building mud walls, gardening, cooking with Daniela and Laura, planting trees, making soap among many other gratifying hands-on experiences.

Whatever your reason for visiting, Tribewanted is sure to please. I have no idea why there could possibly be any bad reviews of this place. Take my advice, as I’ve experienced it first-hand, multiple times – it’s a magical place you’re sure to fall in love with!
