This concept is one after our own hearts, and this is a seriously dedicated tribe whose belief and practice of sustainable living is inspiring. We love the historic beauty and smart restoration of the ancient structures, and the refined handcrafted design both inside and out. This is the spot to come and savor the homegrown culture, food and community spirit of Umbria.
Perched on a ridge on over forty five hectares of stunning Umbrian countryside, this 15th-century hamlet has been thoughtfully and lovingly transformed into three traditional and sustainable holiday apartments. Passing through many hands over the years – including over 50 residents at one time – the hamlet was abandoned in the 1960s and resurrected in 2013, when Tribewanted Monestevole restructured it into a model sustainable community, and fully fitted, eco-lux vacation rentals.
Celebrating and preserving the best of traditional Umbrian living and providing a beautiful, rejuvenating and inspiring experience, the three apartments are designed with stylish simplicity and comforts, each restored with their original historic stone and wood beamed features intact and simple rustic design.
There are horses, goats, a sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats and even an albino peacock at Monestevole. Kids and families are welcomed to come feed the animals in the morning and collect eggs!
Sustainable technologies are part of daily life here. The energy comes from photovoltaic solar panels, the water is heated by thermal solar, rain water and filtration systems are employed throughout the property for irrigation. In the winter heating is powered by a wood-burning stove. The owners are constantly working to improve the property with renewable energies, recycling, water treatment, compost, permaculture and green architecture.
A beautiful model of sustainable living and celebration of Umbrian culture, this unique retreat invites you to relax and enjoy the beauty of the land, play with the animals and savor your very own slice of the Italian good life.

Endlessly picturesque, Umbria remains one of the most idealized settings in Italy. Monestevole is within easy reach of several areas not to be missed.
Umbria is the greenest region of Italy; full of woodlands, which have been sustainably harvested for the past 20 years. Local crops include olive oil, wine, sunflowers, and spelt. The region is famous for its truffles, pork meat and wild boar. Local bread is made without salt due to an old feud with the Pope on salt tax! At Monestevole, there are plenty of walks and bike rides for every level. Climb Monte Acuto or Migianella; walk to Arcelle lake for a wild swim and picnic or visit the abandoned Monestevole Castle.
For those wanting to explore Umbria and Tuscany, Monestevole is ideally placed for excursions to nearby Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Montone, Spello, Norcia, Castelluccio, Spoleto, Montefalco, Citta’ di Castello, Narni, Trasimeno lake, Citta’ della Pieve, Orvieto, Cortona, Arezzo, Siena, Montalcino, Bagno Vignone and the Tevere springs.
