A Zen Space Beneath Edinburgh Castle
Just below the imposing Edinburgh castle along Grassmarket square, is a simple, architect-designed holiday letting in the UK. A surprising and contrasting installation in tone and style to the city's elegant and historic Old Town district, the studio is the first collaborative project designed by Izat Arundell, a design studio recently launched by a young couple who share an appreciation of architecture, traditional craftsmanship and creativity, and a sense of discovery.
A simple concept designed to create a unique impact and experience for guests, the intent was to craft a holiday retreat and creative space that will stand the test of time. A former garage and workshop, the studio is revealed through a wall of glass carved into the 18th-century building's stone facade.
Constructed of all-natural materials, the interiors are warm, peaceful, and tactile, with natural clay plaster walls that regulate humidity levels to the optimum comfort range, velvet limestone tiles that mimic the cobbles outside, and furnishings crafted from a single oak tree from East Lothian.
A small but inviting space, the studio is designed as a quiet retreat for two immersed in, but shielded from the bustling city, and includes an open kitchen and living area divided by a wooden screen from the double bedroom, and all of the modcons and amenities of home.
An absence of decor adds to the credo of "less is more", and allows the holistic approach to architecture and design to shine.
Although primarily created as a residential space, the owners are planning a series of small events and supper clubs to share the studio with guests as well as the creative community.
EDINBURGH'S HISTORIC GRASSMARKET
Located in the historic Grassmarket, the studio sits among one of the most lively and picturesque areas in the city that also serves as a central event space. A bustling array of unique shops, artisanal merchants and designers, and many of the best restaurants and most animated and eclectic pubs are here nestled in the shadow of the imposing castle that dominates the skyline.
One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Scotland's capital is spread across a series of rocky hills overlooking the sea with the medieval Old Town and its jumble of medieval tenements piled high atop the Royal Mile at its heart, and the elegant, Neoclassical gardens and townhouses of New Town strung between Calton Hill and Salisbury Crags.
Nearby Holyrood Park and the imposing Arthur’s Seat peak offer sweeping views of the city and are of special scientific and cultural interest due to its ancient volcanic geology and a well-preserved fort dating back two thousand years. The former industrial port district of Leith is a quickly gentrifying waterfront area buzzing with hip bistros, pubs, and a vibrant creative community.
