A French Sculptor Leaves a Charming Memento in aTownhouse in Ghent

Sensitively and elegantly restored to bring out this historic building’s natural character, this vacation home rental in Belgium’s city of Ghent is a well-preserved example of the historic townhouses that line the cobblestone streets in the town center.

Owned by a native of the city and restored by Rearch Architects, the three-story home is famous for its bronze statue on the corner called ‘Het Breistertje’, which means ‘The Knitster.’

Originally made by French sculptor Jean-Pierre Clemençon for the 1976 exposition “Formes Humaines” at the Rodin Museum in Paris, the artist subsequently decided to build the sculpture into the facade of the house, and it remains a unique part of its identity today.

Reimagined from its historical roots as a light-filled contemporary home, this townhouse has been given a fresh update that offers a calm and stylish refuge in the center of the city.

This property recently achieved Green Key status, an award given to tourism and leisure establishments in recognition of their status as environmentally-friendly, sustainable and responsible businesses. Green Key is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Zilverhof Townhouse

Located near the city’s famous Gravensteen castle in Ghent’s historical center, this vacation home rental in Belgium has been expertly and sensitively restored to highlight it’s historic beauty while integrating quietly luxurious modern amenities to bring it up to date.

The three-story row house has a tall profile and a distinctive facade with a very special bronze sculpture created by sculptor Jean-Pierre Clemençon integrated into the corner.

The ground floor includes a dining room and fully-equipped open kitchen awash in natural light with access to a small interior courtyard. Between the ground and the first floor there is a cozy media corner perfect for relaxing after spending a day in the city.

The first-floor features a spacious en-suite bedroom with two additional single beds that is ideal when traveling with kids, with a second en-suite double bedroom on the second floor.

The attic has been transformed into a cozy nest for two under the rustic timbers at the apex of the house with amazing views of Ghent's famous three towers and Gravensteen castle.

Designed with a fresh, minimalist style that brings out the home’s rustic, historic features, this spacious townhouse is a family-friendly retreat for enjoying the city together.
