Tokyo, Japan
Architect Kintaro Ishida Partners With Casa Wabi Foundation In Cultural Exchange

This vacation home in Tokyo is a cozy, newly renovated, and primely located in a community committed to Japanese tradition. While a wave of modern influence is undeniable with the emergence of modern cafes, design stores, and galleries in the area, Sendagi hasn't lost sight of its past, and is still surrounded by old temples rich with history.

The very foundation of Japanese design systems is harmony and simplicity, and this small house has been completely restored in the traditional tenets of that style.

Set along a street of tightly knit townhouses of many periods, the two-story home is a serene, back-to-basics hideaway that immerses you in an inner world of calm and modesty but with the artistic values of beautiful, natural materials and gentle geometry.

The ground floor space houses a small dining and sitting area with a kitchenette (only a sink) and bathroom.

Up one flight from the street level, the main room opens up to warm wood and light filled living and sleeping areas with two spaces that can be completely open or separated with paper sliding doors. There are a total of five Tatami futons that can be laid out at night between both rooms and removed during the day to allow for adjustable living.

YANESEN DISTRICT

The Yanesen district in old Tokyo is comprised of the Sendagi, Yanaka and Nezu neighborhoods, and is a popular district known in Tokyo where the old Shitamachi "downtown' spirit thrives. Although surrounded by historic Edo period temples and shrines, the area also has a vibrant and youthful scene of artists and galleries, design stores, and cafes, all with that authentic feel.

The bustling Shibuya district is of course renowned for it's vibrant street life and nightlife and its famous pedestrian crossing and is about a twenty-minute metro ride from Sendagi. One of Tokyo's busiest, it connects you to many more of the most popular areas including Harajuku, Shinjuku and Shinagawa.

The local shops and cafe's are excellent and you'll want to explore the city's famed street life in the Ginza and Roppongi neighborhoods. Downtown Tokyo is situated close to all monorail, bus routes and train stations, and is ideal for exploring the outer areas of Yokohama and coastal towns of Kamakura, Yokosuka, and Zushi and to navigate the bustling city with ease.
