A Century Old Kyoto Townhouse Reinvents Traditional Craftsmanship & Historic Aesthetics

Built by a Japanese artist over one hundred years ago, this traditional townhouse and attached Kura are located in the quiet Gosho-Higashi neighborhood near the Imperial Palace between Kyoto Gyoen and the Kamo River. Created and restored by a Japanese German couple, the residence is part of a broader live/work concept that includes a gallery space specializing in high-level contemporary craft, and a simple and serene tea room featuring organically grown green teas.

Collaborating with renowned architect Koichi Futatsumata (Case-real), the restoration and design were done according to historic aesthetic values, employing local craftsmen, but with contemporary sensibilities.

The private entrance on the ground floor opens into a lounge area with a kitchen and a workspace facing the beautiful Japanese moss garden. On the upper floor is the double bedroom with the traditional tatami beds and a modern bathroom.

Balancing tradition and modernity, the Zen aesthetic, warm neutral hues, and attention to detail lend the spaces a serene and inviting sense of style. Kept to a minimum, the decor and vintage Danish furnishings complement the spare and refined spaces.

The intimate tea room includes just six seats with bespoke furnishings by Koichi Touji and Yuji Yamamoto and is open daily for tastings.

For over twenty years the owners have supported and introduced some of the most outstanding contemporary artisans in and outside of Japan at Nichinichi gallery and present unique items and pieces for guests to purchase.

A unique, multifunctional residence, this vacation home rental in Kyoto is an effortlessly elegant example of refinement and craftsmanship.
