Much of its history is lost to time, but it is understood that this vacation home for rent in Illinois was built in the early 20th century in the charming, historic town of Galena.
Once owned by an eccentric local artist, the cottage fell into a state of disrepair before the current owners undertook a two-year renovation project with the help of a local craftsman. The fun, lighthearted restoration recalls its nostalgic sweetness and sense of belonging in this historic district.
The classic clapboard construction and vintage inspired furnishings and decor coupled with every modern amenity make for a luxurious and unique getaway and a slice of small town Americana.
This vacation home for rent in Illinois is nestled at the quiet end of a residential street just a stone’s throw from scenic downtown Galena.
After a careful restoration that preserved much of the home's original historic features, the owners worked to curate a truly boutique homestead, returning it to its turn of the century charm with all of the mod cons for today.
The ground floor includes an intimate and cheery living room and a spacious eat-in kitchen. Upstairs are three bedrooms (two queen and one king) and two modern baths, with room for up to six guests. Each room exhibits careful attention to detail, with high-end finishes, and a focus on comfort and vintage style.

AROUND
The pretty and quaint town of Galena in northwest Illinois was once one of the richest river towns in the midwest in the 19th century. Famous as the home town of Ulysses S. Grant, its perfectly preserved Main Street and many of the pre-civil war buildings and sites are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Situated along the Galena River, the tributary winds out of town before spilling into the mighty Mississippi River a few miles downstream at the border with Iowa.
Largely still rural, the area offers lots of outdoor fun including nearby Chestnut Mountain for summer hiking and winter skiing. Just out of town is Horseshoe Mound Preserve and conservation area overlooking the river valley, the Mississippi River and distant mounds in neighboring Iowa and Wisconsin. Thought to be ancient ceremonial sites, there are more to be seen at nearby Casper Bluff along the river.
