Stay Wild: America's National Parks
American novelist and environmentalist Wallage Stegner famously said, "National parks are the best idea we ever had." We easily agree. In homage, check out these BoutiqueHomes that beg for a day trip to one of the country's 'best'.
Mere minutes from Joshua Tree National Park, this finca-style space is a great escape for a couple. Come hike the protected area with its sculptural rock formations that has long attracted artists and musicians in search of creative inspiration.
This architectural gem that mimics the shape of the local 'hogback' mountains is a one-hour drive to Rocky Mountain National Park, with its towering landscapes, alpine trees and placid lakes. The minimalist cabin is also friends with the environment, created and maintained with minimal human intervention.
Biscayne National Park is best explored by boat, kayak or scuba, as it is 95% underwater. It'll be a day trip for the books if you book Boho Chic in Miami as your home base (a two-hour drive). Perfect for lounging, this laid-back space is all about that poolside and palm tree lifestyle.
If you're planning to spend a week or more in Malibu, consider adding a short trip to see the surreal landscape of Death Valley National Park (a four-hour drive). This glass-fronted home base is quite the oasis to return to, with tropical and native gardens and plenty of lounge spaces that encourage your communion with them.
We love this off-grid, passive solar escape, and next time we're there, we'll happily explore the Buffalo National River, which is only an hour's drive away and flows through some of the most scenic sections of the Ozarks.
Considered "The Galapagos Islands of North America," Channel Islands National Park is a little over three hours from Santa Barbara (you can also take a much quicker flight, but it's more expensive). The pristine islands are a wonderful day trip from Goleta House, a family-friendly ranch with a stylish contemporary makeover.
Our fondness of the Pacific Northwest has found an emblem in this cozy cottage on the Eld Inlet shoreline. If you need a pause from reveling in its views of Mount Rainier, consider a journey to Olympic National Park, a little over an hour away. The glacier-capped peak of Mt. Olympus is surely a worthy contender for your time.
San Antonio Missions is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas, and a great choice for a day trip while staying at Rancho Loma, a boutique hotel that sits on three hundred acres of prairie land. A little more than three hours away, the park is home to three impressive colonial missions from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
