Small Hotels, Big Hearts

Curated by Veronique Lievre

There's a reason why many small hotels feel like home: they often started that way. Others bring in the warm touches of a personal space, or have the feel of being cared for by a family friend.

MASSERIA DAGILUPI, PUGLIA, ITALY

When a former oil mill receives a new life as a sculptural B&B, we sit up and listen. That's the story behind Daglilupi, discovered and restored by a French couple with spectacularly discerning taste.

PALAIS GENTILE, PUGLIA, ITALY

Near the Adriatic sea and its lovely beaches lies an atmospheric 18th-century palazzo with just two double rooms and two suites. Expect a warm family retreat based on the simple pleasures of a small town.

RIFUGIO LANZAGALLO, SICILY, ITALY

Nestled into the countryside, this farmhouse is owned by a Sicilian architect whose pride of design shows. With three suites, the small luxury hotel melds historical bones with contemporary flair, then adds exciting amenities such as a breakfast buffet featuring local delights.

A|S BOUTIQUE RESIDENCE, HAVANA, CUBA

Discovered and restored by an abstract painter and dancer couple, this highly personal hotel is regarded for its boutique offerings such as a coffee bar that showcases local and international art, and on-demand rooftop massages.

SHILA, ATHENS, GREECE

A late-neoclassical residence built in the 1920s in the heart of a rising art capital, the building has been reborn as a modern-day hôtel particulier, inspired by a fictional woman named Shila. An eclectic, room-specific art collection is displayed throughout.

TRIBAL HOTEL, GRANADA, NICARAGUA

This luxury hotel showcases an interesting mix of world-inspired design combined with traditional Nicaraguan colonial crafts and a touch of mid-century modernism. Naturally, it's a darling of many design and travel magazines.

PARCO DEI SESI, PANTELLERIA, ITALY

A former model agent from Paris and her now-husband who worked in tech in Milan left the hustle and settled on the island where they fell in love. Together, they restored an old family property into an uber-stylish small hotel.
