Detail-Minded Small Hotels

Curated by Veronique LIevre

BASSIVIERE BARN,  AQUITAINE, FRANCE

A Dutch couple discovered and restored a 17th-century farmhouse and medieval tower, splitting it into six fully-equipped en suite apartments. In the on-site restaurant, meet up for morning coffee or flip through magazines in the Kinfolk-worthy tableau.

BRODY HOUSE, BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

With romantic neo-classical origins, this 19th-century former palace is now a stylish luxury hotel in the city's artsy Pest district. We love its slightly faded beauty and the unique artwork that can be found in each of the eleven rooms, making the experience a bit like a gallery of sorts.

GRÄTZLHOTEL MEIDLING, VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Built for adventurous design-lovers, this "hotel" is actually seven geographically separate suites located around Meidlinger Markt. Formerly commercial spaces, they were given a contemporary spin. The result is colorful, geometric and fun.

SICILIAN PALACE, SICILY, ITALY

We always love a barrel ceiling, but it's not often that we come across a color-blocked one. Such is the nature of this 18th-century palazzo that marries old world charm with modern elegance. A true classic, it's no wonder Italian nobles used to live here.

LOS ENAMORADOS, IBIZA, SPAIN

Favoring bold colors, shiny textures, and sculptural forms, this hotel – whose name translates as "those in love" – reels you in with its curious treasures and objets d'art. We're in love too, with the glossy orange picnic table and shaggy sheep alone.

LENK LODGE, LENK, SWITZERLAND

Wood-clad dreams come true in this 1920s mountain lodge that was recently brought into a modern context. Preserving tradition wherever possible, rusticity gets that chic and charming touch that might remind you of a Wes Anderson film.

COMPANHIA DAS CULTURAS, FARO, PORTUGAL

Designed around two courtyards, these former ruins of an agricultural settlement still bear literal and proverbial fruit. The hotel has a vegetable garden and a variety of fruit trees on the 40-hectare property, and the gastronomy is as much of a focus as the hospitality.

VILLA EXTRAMUROS, ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL

Take your coffee out by the orange trees and watch as the sun dapples across the Portuguese countryside in this seven-unit hotel that's modern and peaceful in both its design and setting. Soak in the silence of nature, save for an animal friend or family.

MAISON DES ARTS, PROVENCE, FRANCE

A private curated collection of contemporary art and furnishings are on dazzling display in this luxury bed and breakfast that is comprised of two 18th-century residences. We admire the gestalt in every room.

AVIGNON B&B, PROVENCE, FRANCE

A turn-of-the-century guest house in Avignon was turned into four guest rooms that allow the original architecture to shine. Modern amenities do abound, like luxury linens and a continental breakfast.
