Perched on a remote edge of Zion National Park in the wilds of Utah, Lazalu offers a unique perspective on the American Southwest: solitude, wilderness and hiking without crowds. Lazalu was a secluded artist retreat for 20 years, but its owner (documentary filmmaker Robert Perkins) now welcomes guests. The elegant, rustic space consists of two separate houses that sleep eight guests in total, or six and two separately. It’s a great space for weddings, anniversaries, meditation and yoga retreats, adventure expeditions – and much more.
Lazalu consists of a two-bedroom guest house that sleeps six guests, and a studio with one double bed.
The property is off-grid with its own well and solar power system. It includes a common area with access to a kitchen and an outdoor shower. There is an additional small cabin available for work or quiet contemplation in the nearby oak grove.
Towels and sheets are provided. There is a wood stove, iron and hairdryer. The kitchen has a coffeemaker, microwave, fridge and cooking basics. There is an outdoor grill.
The house is accessible for wheelchairs, with wide doorways, step-free access and a disabled parking spot. There is wifi and phone reception, but it’s spotty.
The manager’s house is located on the same site but is private. Guests are welcome to ask questions or borrow from the library of 2,000 art books, literature and poetry.
AROUND
Lazalu is 40 minutes from Springdale and Hurricane, local towns with all the amenities, restaurants and nightlife. But Zion National Park is the big draw – 124,000 acres of wilderness “untrammeled by man, a place where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” Visitors can hike paths explored by ancient peoples and pioneers, enjoy the massive sandstone cliffs in cream, pink and blue, as well as the canyons and forested mesas.
There are numerous trails right outside the house, or within a short drive, including the Subway, Wildcat and Hop Valley trails. Licensed guides are available, and the manager has a wealth of knowledge about things to do in the area – including canyoneering, climbing, ATV rides, zip lines and fishing.
The property is located at 5,800ft in elevation.
