In the mountains: Sta. Maria de Ostuma, Matagalpa, Nicaragua
For those whose privacy is a priority, Sta. Maria de Ostuma offers a rare opportunity to experience life in the cloud forest of Matagalpa, Nicaragua on a working coffee farm nestled in the Arenal Nature Reserve. Not a hotel, Sta. Maria caters specifically to small groups of guests who are seeking exclusive accommodations and exquisite attention to detail during their stay.
Nestled in the highlands of the northern region of Matagalpa, this historic 1,428 hectare property was acquired by Leopoldo Salazar in 1920 to grow coffee. Due to the exceptional location, pleasant weather, and beautiful landscape, Salazar and his wife Esmeralda Arguello opened a small mountain lodge. Nicaraguan-born Bianca Jagger, first wife of the famous Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, was one of the many important guests to visit Santa Maria de Ostuma.
During the 80’s this part of the country was affected by the civil war, and the Sandinista government confiscated the farm. After the war ended in the early 90’s, the property was given back to the Salazar family, and the lodge – oriented to eco/educational tourism, academic and research groups – was reopened and developed for guests who love to be in contact with nature. Those who live and work in the Reserve practice sustainable farming in the production of shade grown coffee, cut flowers, leather leaf ferns, vegetables and dairy cattle.
This lodge is perfect for small groups and will beckon you to return again and again once you learn what Sta. Maria de Ostuma has to offer. Enjoy this unique piece of paradise!
