Villa Maggona, Maggona, Sri Lanka,

Villa Maggona is a serendipitous secret, hidden from the public eye and the beaten track of tourism, a private home that aims at offering you an exceptional experience of generous hospitality, well-being and goodwill. The villa was designed by architect Madhura Prematilleke who won the 2010 Architect’s design award for the villa.
The villa has a cozy living room and four bedrooms: three rooms- each with an en-suite bathroom are strung on a long verandah that runs parallel to the swimming pool. Recently we added a fourth “garden room,” also with en-suite bathroom. All rooms have air conditioning.
A modern dining pavilion at the far left of the pool offers a different ambience for cozy dinners or wet-weather dining. VM guests usually choose to have breakfast and lunch on the verandah.
The entire experience of a stay at VM is designed to ensure visitors feel they are valued guests in this private home: we try to achieve this with quiet grace and discernment of a visitor’s needs, with the goal being to provide a thoughtful yet unobtrusive pampering of the senses.
The concept at VM is based on an attitude of generous hospitality derived from memories of visiting a favourite aunt’s or grandma’s home – memories of innumerable homemade goodies from breakfast to dinner to even stolen midnight feasts: so at VM there are ‘elevenses’ by the pool, tea and cakes in the shade of the coconut trees in the afternoon and delicious bites for cocktail hour in addition to the main meals.
Food is prepared and served in an authentic home style and we subscribe to an old belief that when cooked and served with joy and generosity, a meal becomes a blessing to both giver and receiver.
As an extension of this we create personalised menus for each group of visitors to the Villa, keeping traditional Sri Lankan food a mainstay of the menus. To help us serve the tastes of the different members of your group we request food preferences in advance – we like you to tell us if you prefer seafood and/or meat or vegetarian dishes as well as the level of spice. (Traditional Sri Lankan curries can be quite spicy, but Chamilaa, our wonderful cook, will create milder tastes according to your preference).
The Villa is located just 20 minutes away from Bentota beach resort and its specialized water sports services including sea snorkeling, jet skiing, diving and boat trips on the lagoon.
In the vicinity is Lunuganga, the amazing home and landscaped garden of Sri Lanka’s best known architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa. The property is taken care of by a Trust and we can organize a day visit that could include lunch etc.
The Villa is a short drive from the UNESCO heritage town of Galle – a Fort town built by the Dutch 400 years ago.
For Wild life enthusiasts, the turtle hatchery about half an hour drive away, or whale watching at Mirissa, about an hour away, are a must.
