The Crane, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Located in one of Amsterdam’s most fascinating and creative neighborhoods, this once abandoned and dilapidated old harbour crane has been transformed into one of the most talked about design hotels in the world. A renowned industrial landmark, the three hundred ton, fifty meter high installation is a tour de force of design, constructed in 1951 by The Hensen Factory. Undergoing one of the most significant structural developments of its time, the hotel has received extensive international media coverage heralding its uniqueness and visionary concept. Without altering the functional layout, a large team of architects, structural engineers and designers were led by the owner and main developer to restore and reimagine the crane as a unique design hotel.
Stacked on top of one another, it now houses three independent and uniquely designed high end suites hovering at fifteen stories above the earth. Each is self contained and individually designed with phenomenal, ever changing, 360° views over Amsterdam, the river IJ and the distant North Sea. Rotating slowly and almost imperceptibly, the crane turns in the wind altering the view throughout the day.
Each of the three split level suites, is designed and inspired by distinctive themes with opulent materials and unique design pieces including gold ceilings, onyx walls, Edward van Vliet wall papers, Chivasso woven linings and bespoke furnishings and decor. From soft to saturated colors, vibrant to abstract, each room offers a exhilirating and individual experience.
There is an elevated picnic area and cabin accessed via a ladder from the main bedroom and at the top you’ll find the now world famous Villeroy & Boch open air spa pool, with breathtaking views.
There’s also a fully equipped TV broadcasting studio designed for live stream television or music recording as well as a unique space for private parties, events and presentations. For the adventurous at heart, there is bungee jumping available where you’ll enjoy a thirty five meter free fall.
Thrilling, unique and inspired in its non-conformity, this is a once in a lifetime experience.
