Torre di Moravola, Umbria, Italy

Torre di Moravola is an elegant and magical small hotel in the heart of Umbria, ten kilometers from the medieval village of Montone and overlooking the Carpini Valley that boasts the ‘sensation of being completely removed from the modern world’. Outside you will find ancient medieval stone walls, herb gardens and olive groves roamed by wild boars while the interior is an eminently stylish blend of pared-down modernism, travertine stone floors, and glass screens.
The hotel is a converted Medieval watchtower with seven tower suites that have been decorated with striking modern furniture, luxury items, and great attention to details. Six suites are arranged on four floors around a central staircase, with the reception, kitchen, and eating hall located on the ground floor. The main suite has a living room with high ceilings, a stone fireplace, and a verandah with an amazing view. Each suite is furnished with designer items and features a sunken bath. There is also a rooftop infinity pool.
The original structure is a 12th-century medieval watchtower, which was built by the Fortebraccio family to guard Montone from invading knights. In 1999, architect Christopher Chong and designer Seonaid Mackenzie bought the property, and started a nine-year renovation project. It has been a labor of love, and, in spite of many accolades, Moravola remains deeply personal hotel.
