Chhahari Retreat, Bagmati, Nepal
Located on the border of the beautiful Shivapuri National Park, this family owned and operated lodge opened in 2010 after years as a private summer residence. Initially hosting family and friends, the desire to share this lovely private setting inspired the owners to create a unique retreat that could be experienced by all who love nature and culture. Surrounded by national park, mature forests and organic gardens, the lodge sits above the cloud line with stunning views of Kathmandu below (Be prepared for a bit of a trek up the hill on foot or 4WD!).
Comprised of three separate buildings, the main lodge houses the restaurant and dining areas as well as a bar lounge and meeting space while the ten double en suite rooms are housed separately in quaint bungalows. Designed for maximum privacy and peace, the property is meant to only accommodate small groups at any one time. Constructed of brick and tile, the structures are designed with traditional Nepalese architecture and the natural landscape in mind and adhere to sustainable building and operating practices. Using all natural locally sourced materials and labor, the construction furnishings and decor are all handcrafted and of authentic Nepali design mixed with modern comforts. The interiors are inviting and serene with a relaxed but refined approach to design and classic style.
The entire property employs solar and sustainable design for efficient cooling, heating, energy consumption and organic food cultivation and preparation. The restaurant prepares fresh and delicious local and continental cuisine much of which is harvested from the land where you can pick your own healthy snacks and learn about organic growing techniques. There’s a separate therapeutic spa that offers rejuvenating massage and beauty treatments for post trek relaxation.
Inspired by the beauty and natural landscape of Nepal and it’s people, this peaceful retreat is a great escape rooted in Nepalese traditions.
Complimentary breakfast is served daily with free coffee and tea throughout the day. Wifi throughout the property. There is no TV or other media and the property is predominantly solar powered and sustainably operated. Housekeeping and laundry facilities.
Nestled just below the massive Shivapuri National Park, you are perfectly positioned for incredible day hikes (or longer treks) directly from the lodge. The surrounding village is charming and primitive from where you’ll find Buddhist Monasteries like Rundhup Chopling Gomba and Nagi Gompa. Down the hill is the small town of Narayanthanwithin and further on is central Kathmandu. Full of UNESCO Heritage sites, the bustling valley and streets below offer stunning cultural excursions.
