Punta Caracol Acqua-Hotel, Panama

The nine cabins of the Punta Caracol Acqua-Hotel reside on stilts over the Caribbean Sea in Panama, on a mile-long coral-reefed coast. Views are the crystal clear waters of the Bocas del Toro archipelago, and the odd dolphin. Cabins are constructed in traditional local style - native plants, clay, bamboo and wild cane, with a palm leaf roof. The hotel also boasts some very modern technology. Cabins are powered by solar energy, gas cooling is used in refrigerators, and a bio-digestor debugs sewage. The hotel is remote, requiring a flight from Panama City, or a boat from Almirante.

We found our trip to and 4-day stay at the Punta Caracol Acqua-Hotel to have for us the perfect mixture of adventure and quiet seclusion for a romantic anniversary and milestone birthday. The rustic cabins over the water provided all that we expected and what we needed to get away from the rat race of our daily work lives. While one day we took the launch to Bocas Town to walk and see the local culture, swimming, snorkeling and kayaking from the back deck were the only reason for leaving our hammocks otherwise. Don’t believe other reviews that say there is nothing to see when snorkeling. Being from Florida and having a lifetime of swimming and snorkeling experience allowed us to know how to get out away from the cabin and walkway pilings and see an abundance of coral, sponge and undersea life. In fact, about 600 meters from our back deck locals brought scuba divers and snorkelers to view the reefs and underwater life. It was a short kayak ride for us to explore the same place and more.
The entire staff at the Punta Caracol was exceptionally pleasant and unobtrusive but always at the ready to address our every request. The food was nutritious, simple and ample.
If one is looking to get away and stay in the lap of luxury, look elsewhere. However, if one is looking for a little adventure (two boat rides to get to the hotel), seclusion and quiet, and simple yet very functional lodging, we highly recommend considering staying at the Punta Caracol.
