Makawao Cabin, Maui, Hawaii
This cabin is all about location. Situated on the dividing line between the wet and dry sides of Maui, it’s just minutes from the beach and within easy reach of Haleakala. It is also located within 8.5 acres of tropical gardens and farmland, which guests are welcome to explore.
The garden is full of trees: mango, coconuts, coffee, papaya, lemon, tangerine, bananas, avocados, lilikoi (passion fruit), macadamia nuts, lychee, ylang ylang and breadfruit, as well as flowers and spices — haleconia, bird of paradise, jade vine, ginger, allspice. And, depending on the season, a stream runs through it.
There is a working organic nursery, a botanical garden and a coffee farm on site, as well as a Sacred Garden for mindful unwinding. Owners are happy to give new arrivals an orientation to teach them about Hawaiian plants, coffee production, and water lilies. They also offer weddings, massage, retreats and much, much more.
This is not an environment in which you would necessarily expect a log cabin (more normally associated with pine trees and grizzly bears), so this property is a quirky surprise. Vaulted ceilings and a loft level make it feel more like a treehouse. Decor has an island vibe – with bamboo furniture, stained glass, Hawaiian print fabrics, and original artwork. The large lanai overlooking tropical vegetation is Hawaiian living at its best.
The cabin has five bedrooms, one in the loft and one in a separate studio with an additional bathroom, kitchenette and private entrance.
The house has a large living room, covered lanai, fully equipped kitchen, and picnic/BBQ areas. It has a gas stove/oven, microwave, toaster oven, coffeemaker, dishwasher, blender, citrus juicer, ironing board and iron. Two bathrooms have a bathtub/shower, the other a shower. There is plenty of off-road parking.
Gardening classes are available for guests, as well as tours of several of Maui’s other unique farms. The owners also offer personalized private retreats and can arrange for massage, private yoga or Qigong, as well as various types of coaching.
The house is located just 20 minutes from the airport and Costco, 10 minutes from beaches, and is only two miles from Makawao town’s restaurants and shops. Haliimaile General Store and Mama’s Fish House are minutes away. It is seven minutes from Paia, five minutes from Haiku town. and 45 minutes from the entrance to Haleakala National Park – a must on any visit to Maui.
The property is also close to other attractions like the Piiholo Ziplines, the Temple of Peace, kite- and windsurfing at Ho’okipa and the famous Jaws big surf site. Great hiking trails are just three miles away.
Makawao is located on the mid-slopes of Haleakala, and is one of the country’s foremost arts communities. The town has eclectic shops and art galleries, where you can watch glassblowers, wood sculptors and painters at work. The Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center offers classes and free exhibits. Makawao is also famous for its horseback Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo. The Makawao Rodeo, held on the Fourth of July, is Hawaii’s largest paniolo competition.
