Located along the coast on a hilltop overlooking the marina and bay, the Porto Vecchio peninsula features two of the best beaches in the southern region and is also an attractive cosmopolitan city. The old town center or “Borgo,” is a charming maze of narrow streets centered around the famous 16th-century citadel with stunning views across the water. To both the north and south are a variety of popular beaches as well as the Cala Rossa headland, with its peaceful coves, and the long, sandy San Ciprianu. South of the city are the sandy beaches of Santa Guilia, and Palombaggia, the most famous beach on the island, with its series of coves facing the Cerbicales islands. Figari is under a half hour to the southwest and the famous fortress and harbor town of Bonifacio sits at the southernmost tip of the island.
