The Mill, Corsica, France
This beautiful old mill has been in the same family since the 17th century and underwent a complete restoration in 2005. Originally used to mill olive oil and flour, it has now been converted into a 3-bedroom home which retains many of the building’s original features.
The mill is spilt into three levels, each accessed by stairs, making it unsuitable for small children. However, there is plenty of room for groups. Accommodation includes one bedroom that sleeps two, a single bedroom, and a third bedroom with beds for one adult and two children. Two of the rooms have en-suite toilets, and all have showers. The living room has two large couches, one of which can be converted into another bed that sleeps two. There is one further toilet.
Design features we love include the living room’s glass floor, which allows daylight to disperse throughout the house and affords great views of the dining room below, and the outside dining room area with views of the garden and bridge.
If you love hiking, there are many great trails to be found around the mill. For example, the GR20 route, which has been called the ‘toughest long-distance trail in Europe’, traverses Corsica diagonally from north to south. It may be tough, but travelers are rewarded with some of the most beautiful views on the continent.
Mountain guides are available to lead hikers from Ville di Paraso, the village of the mill, on half or full-day hikes, which can be customized to suit guests’ interests and abilities.
