The newest addition to the Boutique Homes collection is Casa de las Estrellas, a gorgeous vacation rental in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Pictures of the house are absolutely dazzling on their own, so you can imagine how amazing the property is in real life.

Created by award-winning architects Steven and Cathi House of House and House Architects, Casa de las Estrellas is a handmade blend of modern design and Mexican style. The English translation of the property’s name is “House of the Stars” and the Houses have extended this theme to every room with an evocative use of color and impeccably placed details.

The House’s design ethos is described on their website as “humane and handcrafted modernism”. This is an apt way of summing up vibe of Casa de las Estrellas. The often cold and dispassionate qualities of modernist architecture are softened and updated here with an emphasis on the organic. The first floor rooms open up to a main courtyard patio filled with lush plants; the patio floor is a swirling pattern of river rocks, specially chosen for their color and individual beauty.

Innovative use of glass and steel grids direct natural light throughout the house, throwing shafts of light where you least expect them. A repurposed, authentically timeworn carpenter’s workbench now serves as a dining room table. The custom stone and ironwork, vividly-hued tiles, and polished concrete that are used to such great effect are the work of local craftspeople.

The Houses really “get” the importance of color in the Mexican tradition and have used a palette of mango, colbalt, and sage throughout the house. Their intuitive understanding of the culture infuses Casa de las Estrellas with a native vibrancy that’s perfect for the setting. Just like the stars themselves, Casa de las Estrellas glows from within.

Casa de las Estrellas is located in the historic city center of San Miguel de Allende, a central Mexican town renowned for its mild climate and beautiful assortment of preserved 17th and 18th century buildings. San Miguel de Allende was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 for both its historic and cultural significance. The Casa is just blocks from the main square and guests can meander down charming streets lined with authentic examples of Neoclassical and Baroque architecture on their way to the artisan’s market to purchase local folk-art and crafts.
